There’s never a good time for your heat to go out. But if you’re hosting parties or have a house full of guests, you really don’t have time for this problem to spring up. Here’s what you can do if your heat suddenly stops working this winter.

  1. Check your thermostat. The issue may not be the furnace, after all. Make sure it’s switched onto “heat” and check the temperature. Someone may have touched the thermostat, or maybe you forgot to put it on the right setting. This is the easiest and first thing you should check, just in case.
  2. Consider the fuel if your furnace runs on gas or oil. Make sure there’s fuel left in the tank. You’ve likely been using the heat for a little while now, and it could use a refill.
  3. Clean the filter. A dirty or clogged filter limits airflow and can cause heat and pressure to build up inside. Most newer systems will recognize this and shut down before any major damage can occur. If you can’t remember the last time you changed the filter, this should become a priority.
