But sometimes it’s hard to spot the opportunities to save those precious pennies. One of the best long-term investments you can make both to your house and your wallet is to go green – and that’s why we’re going to talk about what you can do to cut down on your electric bill with LED lights.

The traditional incandescent light bulb.

If you’ve been suffering from high electricity bills, it’s time to consider making the transition to LED (light emitting diode) bulbs for your home. In 2015, the average annual electricity consumption for a U.S. residential utility customer was almost 11,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh), an average of around 900 kWh per month (U.S. Energy Information Administration). The average light bulb in a home typically requires anywhere from 40-100 watts. That’s a pretty good bit of energy being used up every month, when you consider how many  lights are in your home!

Luckily, there’s the LED alternative. An LED bulb with similar brightness (measured in lumens) to an incandescent 60 watt bulb only uses 8 to 12 watts. That’s a heck of a lot of energy (and money) being saved!

Advantages of LED Lights over Incandescent

  • They come in a variety of colors.
  • The lifespan is drastically longer.
  • Requires about 1/5 the wattage.
  • They’re safer – they run much cooler, reducing the risk of combustion
  • They’re sturdier – they typically have an epoxy lens instead of a glass housing

One important thing to keep in mind – LED light bulbs work best when exposed. They run cooler because of a heat sink at the base of the bulb. From there, the heat escapes into the air around it. So it’s best to only replace lights that aren’t completely enclosed, so they’ve got some room to breathe.

With all of the money you could be saving, why not make the switch now?
