A broken water heater isn’t something anyone wants to deal with, especially not as a surprise. If you keep a close eye on your unit, however, there are some clear signs you can watch for, so you are more prepared for a breakdown and less taken off guard.

  1. First of all, if you have no hot water, this could be an indicator. Older water heaters may take some time to warm your water up, but if nothing happens in a few minutes, it’s clear there’s a problem. It is possible that your pilot light could be out, also. Contact a professional to handle the task, but if the unit’s performance continues to worsen, you will need to replace it altogether.
  2. Strange noises coming from your water heater? This is also a sign. Popping, rattling, or pinging, indicates a breakdown. If your unit is making these noises, make sure you schedule an appointment and try to avoid a full replacement if possible.
