It’s getting so chilly outside! Last month, we talked about how to avoid the dreaded pipes gripes. Today, we’re going to focus on your home heating system and what you can do to make sure it’s running at optimum efficiency.

Most importantly, have your furnace inspected by an HVAC professional. A HEP comfort specialist can ensure your heating system is running smoothly. If you think your heating system is experiencing any kind of issues, be sure to mention this to our technician. HEP offers a full diagnosis for $59 – if there’s a problem with your unit, we’ll find it and make a recommendation. Also, quotes for new HVAC units are FREE!

  • Check the air filters in your HVAC system and throughout your house! A dirty air filter will prevent proper airflow, and that means a lot of wasted energy.

Interesting fact: did you know that heating and cooling systems account for roughly 50% of residential energy consumption in the U.S.? So, what can you do to cut down on an outrageous heating bill?

In our earlier winter post, we mentioned that you can reverse your ceiling fans (clockwise) for better circulation. It’s also a good idea to make sure your chimney is clean.

  • If you’ve got a wood-burning fireplace, use it! If it’s gas-powered, avoid it. It uses a lot more energy to heat your home than your home heating system would. And while we’re touching base on fireplaces, make sure your smoke detectors work! It’s a good idea to change out the batteries twice a year.
It's good to have a backup!

If you’ve got a wood-burning fireplace, make sure you’ve got enough firewood!

  • You can also use a programmable thermostat – we recommend setting it around 55 degrees at night and 60 degrees during the day. You’ll notice the difference when the heating bill comes around!

If you follow these simple bits of advice, you’ll have a warm and cozy winter. So throw on some fuzzy socks, pour yourself a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy this weather! Would you like to know more about making your home heat-efficient? Check out our general winter prep blog post!
