Tomorrow is a time of giving thanks and enjoying the company of friends and family. It’s a time of getting together to cook (and devour) fantastic food, make conversation and watch some football.

The calm before the storm.
With so many cars on the road and people moving about the house, it’s more important than ever to be safe! Here are a few safety tips to ensure that you and your loved ones have a stress-free Thanksgiving, along with some interesting facts!
Cooking
Whether you’re the master chef, the assistant, or just passing through, it’s important to know that nearly four times as many home cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving Day.
-Check your food regularly! A burnt turkey dinner is a sad turkey dinner.
-Keep children and pets away from anything that can get hot – and keep matches / lighters away from children.
-Make sure your smoke alarms work by pushing the test button.
-Make sure you’ve got a fire extinguisher in the kitchen or nearby.
-Remember to turn the stove / oven off!
Travel
If you’re going to hit the road for the holiday, here are a few pointers:
-Plan ahead! Keep a road map on hand and stay tuned for local traffic alerts.
-Keep an emergency kit in your car. In the event there’s an accident, you’ll be thankful for being prepared.
-Set your thermostat to something around 50 degrees in the winter to keep your appliances and pipes from freezing.
-Leave your water heater on the lowest setting to keep the water from freezing.
-Unplug the electronics – a lot of home appliances use electricity even when they’re off.
-Set your refrigerator to around 42 degrees and your freezer to 5 degrees. It will save energy, but still be cold enough to keep the items inside from perishing.
Interesting Facts
-The first Thanksgiving took place in 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts and lasted three days!
-Benjamin Franklin wanted America’s national bird to be the turkey, not the bald eagle.
-Only male turkeys gobble.
-Each year in America, roughly 46 million turkeys are consumed.
-The state that eats the most turkey on Thanksgiving? California.
-Aboard the International Space Station, astronauts will be eating sliced turkey, candied yams, cherry and blueberry cobbler, cornbread, green beans, mushrooms and mashed potatoes while watching streams of the football games.

On today’s schedule: exercise, support systems maintenance, scientific research…and throwing down on some Thanksgiving dinner.
