What do you do when you walk into your kitchen and get hit by that smell that has you checking the trash, the fridge, and the sink? You want to eliminate the odor as soon as possible and figure out what it is. When it turns out the smell is coming from your kitchen sink, here are some tips on how to handle it.

Rotting food can get stuck in the drain or garbage disposal, causing terrible smells in your space. Running ice cubes through your garbage disposal will help loosen food particles that are stuck on the blades. Once you’ve done this, use one cup of baking soda, one cup of white vinegar, and some boiling water to finish the job. You’ll want to pour in the baking soda first, then the vinegar, let sit for 10-15 minutes and then pour the boiling water down the drain. This will eliminate the odors and give you a clean, fresh pipe.
Keep in mind if you don’t have a garbage disposal, forcing food particles down the drain isn’t a good idea. While smaller particles can pass through your pipes easily, larger bits can get stuck and build up over time. This will result in some unpleasant odors in your kitchen. So remember, if you don’t have a disposal in your sink, dump your scraps into the garbage. If odors are still an issue, consider emptying the trash more frequently or wrapping your food waste in bags before throwing it away.
