Whether you use a space heater regularly during the cold months or just in emergencies or in the garage, it’s essential to know how to properly use them to ensure your safety. Here are some “do and don’t” tips to help.

Things You Should Do

  • Keep the heater at least 3ft away from combustible materials such as beds, sofas, curtains, paper, clothes, or anything that could easily catch fire.
  • Make sure the power cord is not damaged in any way.
  • Keep your heater on a stable and level surface with minimal risk of it being knocked over.
  • Ensure the plug is secure in the outlet so that it doesn’t come loose or fall out.
  • Teach everyone in the home to properly operate the heater.
  • Make sure your heater is certified safe to use. There will be a safety logo on the back.
  • Make sure you turn off the unit when you go to sleep, are in a different room, or just can’t keep an eye on it.
  • Ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working correctly.
  • If your heater requires fuel, make sure you use the correct kind.

Things You Shouldn’t Do

  • Don’t use a space heater designed for an area larger than you need.
  • Don’t run the power cord from your heater under rugs, carpets, or furniture.
  • Don’t use a fuel-burning heater inside the home. If you do, ensure it’s properly ventilated.
  • Don’t allow children to operate your heater without proper training and supervision.
  • Don’t put anything flammable around the front, side, or rear of the heater.
  • Don’t use or operate the heater near water or if you are wet. You could be shocked as a result.
  • Don’t use an extension cord or power strip unless you have absolutely no other choice.
  • Don’t put your heater on top of a table, chair, or any unstable surface.
  • Don’t use the heater if the power cord or wall heater feels hot to the touch.
