Dishwashers can make cleaning up after dinner less stressful and less time-consuming. But beware, not everything should go into the dishwasher. Some kitchen items can get ruined in the dishwasher, and your appliance can even get damaged too. It may take a few extra minutes, but some things are better off being washed by hand. Here are a few things you should wash by hand.

  1. Cast-Iron: You can use them on the stove, over an open fire, or even in the oven, but they should never be placed in the dishwasher. Cast-iron needs to be seasoned before being used, and a cycle in the dishwasher will undo the hard work and effort you put into seasoning.
  2. Wood: Wooden spoons, dishes, and cutting boards can make cooking a breeze, but you don’t want to put them in the dishwasher. Hot water and high temperatures can warp these items or melt the glue that holds them together. Use warm water, soap, and a soft-bristled brush to keep them clean.
  3. Insulated Mugs: If you enjoy hot coffee or tea in the morning, insulated travel mugs are convenient and environmentally friendly. But one cycle in the dishwasher can ruin the insulation, and then you’ll be left with a cold cup of coffee.
