Coughing, sneezing, and sniffling are some of the most common sound effects throughout the colder seasons of the year, and the flu is making its way around like crazy, again. Whether you’re typically prone to getting sick or you’re trying to prevent anyone in your household from feeling under the weather, here are a few ways to kick germs to the curb.

Bathroom

One of the primary spots where germs reside and illness begins is in the bathroom. From the toilet bowl to the sink handles, every square inch of the most used room in your home needs to be scrubbed down. Lucky for you, you won’t have to do as hard of a job as you might think. Let’s break it down.

Toilet: Being the most important fixture in your bathroom, you’ll want to sanitize this from head to toe, without neglecting the inside of the bowl, either. Instead of using a heavy, chemical cleaner, opt for a green cleaning agent. This will give your toilet the deep cleaning that it needs, without hindering your indoor air quality with those strong, lingering chemical emissions.

Sink: Of course, your sink is a hot commodity, but how often do you clean it? Sometimes, homeowners will only clean the faucet handles and not the actual basin of the sink. If you’re on the hunt to banish germs, start by using that same green cleaning agent and give the bowl a good wipe down. You’ll want to be gentle and use a paper towel or sponge since particular sinks can scratch if you use something too abrasive. Once the basin is clean, wipe down the faucet and handles, and then you’ll be good to go!

Kitchen

Once you’ve cleaned the remainder of your bathroom, it’s time to move onto the kitchen. When you come home from work, you might place your keys or purse on the countertop. These are things that only invite even more germs to lurk into your home. To combat this, here’s what you need to do.

Countertop: You guessed it, start with your countertops first! When doing this, you’ll want only to use cleaning products that are safe and won’t contaminate food, since that’s where most of the dinner preparation happens. After you’ve washed down the counters, let them air dry for five-to-ten minutes before placing any kitchen accessories back on them. We highly recommend including your kitchen sink in your countertop cleaning process; repeat the same steps as the bathroom sink cleaning!

Appliances: Finally, you’ll want to wipe down all of your appliances in your kitchen. Specifically anything with handles, such as the fridge. Before you start spraying cleaning solution on your appliances, whether they’re stainless steel or not, it’s best to use paper towels. Stay away from steel wool or anything abrasive, because that will cause irreversible surface damage. Additionally, use a green cleaning agent and stay away from strong chemical cleaners like chlorine, bleach, etcetera, since many chemicals can deteriorate various surface finishes. Once you begin to wipe down each appliance, not only will they shine bright, but they’ll be cleaner than before!
